Human Rights Spotlight programme trains Bonsucro team in human rights due diligence methodology

In May 2026, Proforest delivered a training session for the Bonsucro team in Brazil, sharing the methodology and practical tools developed through the Human Rights Spotlight programme. Over the course of a full-day workshop, participants engaged in exercises and simulations designed to address stakeholder engagement challenges within the sugarcane sector, with a particular focus on workers, suppliers and local communities. The initiative reinforces the understanding that human rights due diligence goes beyond meeting compliance requirements: it is about placing people at the centre of business decision-making.

Natália Pinheiro Cêra, Bonsucro Brazil Coordinator, took part in the event and commented on the training: “With this new knowledge, our Bonsucro team will continue the Human Rights Good Practices Pathway Project, which aims to build the capacity of a target group of sugar mills and sugarcane producers in Northeast Brazil. The project seeks to equip them with the resources and knowledge needed to identify and address human rights risks in the region. As early as next week, we will be in Northeast Brazil sharing this newly acquired knowledge and promoting better practices across the sugarcane sector.”

The training marks an important milestone in the programme’s journey. Bonsucro selected Human Rights Spotlight to lead, in Brazil, a pilot initiative to monitor projects funded by the Bonsucro Impact Fund that have demonstrated significant positive impact. The next phase will involve engagement with sugar mills in the state of Paraíba, marking the beginning of the replication of this approach with additional companies in the sector.

The programme is now moving into a new phase, with the inclusion of new mills and a deeper engagement with previous participants. Companies operating within the sugarcane value chain that wish to strengthen their human rights maturity, enhance stakeholder dialogue, improve the management of social risks, and increase positive impacts for people are invited to take part in this process.
